Essential Information

August 17th & 18th 2027, IAU General Assembly, Rome

Summary

Artificial Intelligence is increasingly used by students, educators and science communicators to generate explanations, images, educational materials and projects, yet the astronomy community lacks shared guidelines, evaluation frameworks and coordinated international discussion on how these tools affect learning, scientific accuracy, critical thinking and public understanding. This Focus Meeting will bring together astronomers, educators, outreach professionals, AI specialists and policymakers to examine both the opportunities and the risks of AI in astronomy education and public engagement. The programme includes global overviews, analysis of ethical and regulatory frameworks, and an extensive set of case studies and tools from diverse regions. A final panel will identify common needs, open questions and converging themes providing the community with a Community Recommendations document containing recommendations for responsible, inclusive, scientifically sound and empirical validated use of AI, contributing to the development of preliminary best practices and recommendations for future work in this rapidly evolving field.
